So much so that I'm goof to be sewing almost non stop until out next markets! I have to say, I am loving these. The pockets wrap around the side about an inch too, with big buttons and faux pocket flaps on the back. Keeps these a tad more wearable for day as well as being able to dress them up formally. Add a dapper Bapa hat and you're all set!

For the day they become super funky and fly boys' wear.

These are all on the cards for summer short shorts, so itll be a long wait yet!

The burnt orange is set to become double layered warm patchwork tees, and the brown and yellow are for more short shorts. Summer is all about legs baby!

Vintage nylon/elastane for some retro bathers and some gorgeous new chocolate check for winter jackets and pants.
Can't wait to go proper fabric shopping and get all the meterage I'll need for the upcoming Mathilda's markets. Getting closer now!

ahem, to the point: i am now a mac girl.
a small, white macbook with a snow leopard on it. i'm sure that means something to mac peeps out there. all i know is i'm completely converted!
except i now have to relearn how to do stuff all over again. like all the keyboard shortcuts. where are the 'end' and 'home' keys? and why doesn't the delete button actually delete stuff? sometime it does, but sometimes it doesn't and now i'm confused.
but i love being able to sync everything together the same now (along with the shiny new ipad for xmas, woooo!).

any good tips out there for us newbies?

oh, and happy new year everyone!
my resolutions this year are: get fat then thin again(sooner rather than later i hope). get fitter and less slug shaped and jiggley custardo filled. going to try tap dancing coming in feb, so we'll see how badly i mangle it! organise my bookwork better (must buy quickboks. oops, make that quickbOOks, not rapid chickens, ha ha ha!) what else? um, ooh, to grow the business more and to be able to outsource some of the production such as the tee shirt printing and hopefully some of the sewing too. (locally of course, i want to keep it as close to hand made as possible).
i think that's it. what about you?

Isn't this metal cot gorgeous? I love how see through it is, rather than most of the big heavy wooden ones around now. And red! Probably not super safe for a newborn, but great for a toddler.

These are out of a fairytale almost. They remind me of the 'Tilly and friends' book 'Goodnight Tiptoe'.

I think I had one of these satchels when I was a kid. Or not. But I love the colour blocking and simplicity- no trademark characters.

And how cute is this little man? You may just see something similar for AW11, methinks. Watch this space.

I don't normally advise denim on denim, but I'm kinda giddy about this romper. Although I'd worry about a toilet training toddler in it. And red boots!

This clown is creepy. Don't make this for a small child unless you want to give them nightmares.

Happy little lion. I'm definitely getting a lion vibe at the moment.
It's a bit too cliche, but Kingston loves them at the moment, so I might have to tweak and play to come up with a cool variant.

Every boy loves dinosaurs, and king is a little obsessed, his bed is covered with them. But I think this one would eat all the others and poop stuffing for a week, he's huuuuge!

I love how this kid is such a runner that not only is she wearing a harness, but that it has bells on it just in case she does escape.

Well we put our tree up this weekend. Actually we put two up. The nice wooden one we got at a country road ex merchandising sale (with home made toddler painted decorations) and the tacky but delicious fibre optic one. Guess which one king likes best? Yup. Plastic fantastic wins again. At least through a filter it looks cute and 70's.

And a certain little boy was making farty raspberries on the chair. Sigh. Boys learn early.

Autumn winter research

Just doing some more research and getting inspired for designing autumn/winter 2011. Since we'll be on leave over Xmas and early Jan, I thought I'd take that time to fully design and draw up any tee prints, since I'll be interstate and can't do patterns or toilles or sewing.
Looking through all my lovely vintage sewing and craft books (yay for a long history of op shopping and hoarding), and even pulling out some photos of family from my childhood. I'm just loving all daggy 70's stuff. Even yellow and brown. Which I normally loathe. What's happening to me?!

Just trying to grade up some patterns from 1-3 out to 4-6 on the computer. Wow it takes forever. Faster by hand. But at least once digitized I can admit and adapt faster and then plan out lays too. Sigh. If only I had thousands of dollars for gerber or lectra. One day.

Inspiration pictures: what's fueling the fire right now

My pin board above is slowly being taken over by 70's funk. Yeah. Some more finds in random places that are slowly building up a picture or where we're heading next season. Gotta get the vibe going before I can really know what I'm designing.

Typography seems to be coming to the fore too, a lot of hand drawn letters around and bold use of classic fonts with an update rather than wacky fonts.

Old worn leather, with colour like waxed, weathered wood. Burnt orange and umber, sienna and bold yellow. While slick slate gray, black and powder soft blue temper the wild bursts of citrus.

Homely stitching and macrame monogrammed matching chenille.

Just a few patterns I've picked up this last week on my op shop journeys. I'm a bit in love with the seventies funk / dorky look at the moment. (thinking back to my youth of skivvies and brown cords!) so I'm definitely going to be trying out a few of these patterns over the holidays. See if I can adapt any of them and get some inspiration for the new winter line next year. No outright copies though- aside from being naughty, it's just plain lazy as a designer.

Speaking of holidays, we'll be taking off December 18th through to the end of January (unless I get bored earlier), so highly unlikely that there'll be any shop updates during that time. I will blog and blather a lot though, as I'll spend the 'break' designing next season and working on patterns and such.
Ok, off to watch a roller derby grand final at the showgrounds, yeah! Toodles!

Gleugh! Full of the snots and head snakes now that my body finally gets a break after all the market preparation and 2am bedtimes (iPhone wants to change that to 'beatings' ha ha ha), and long long 14hr days for the last two weeks.
Was it worth it? Yes yes yes and yes. We got to meet sooo many lovely people who all had delicious things to say about our stuff (yay!) and we met some even more wonderful peeps who ran other stalls, got some goodies for our Xmas list ticked off, and even made a couple of sales to boot (though no where near the silver shop behind us, wow they did not stop for a breath all day).
Um, where was I? Oh yes, being sick and knackered. Hence no shop updates until now. Sorry! Will take new pics tomorrow and upload wed and thurs nights. Will be less snotty then!
I hope everyone enjoyed themselves on Sunday?

I wonder if we can do undies next season? Just something cool and funky, but not covered in licensed corporate cartoons. I prefer the look of the tighty boxer briefs over jockeys though. I only have a nearly 2yo, what does the four to six set prefer? And do they need that hole in the front at such a young age? I don't really know much about owning a willy, clearly.

Um. You don't. I broke 5 size 16 needles to learn that even if I bang the needle plate back into shape, it's not actually fixed. Of course it broke just when I had to get orders made, too didn't it. So back to the trusty domestic to finish them (so achingly slooooow), and tomorrow night my lovely singer will be whole again.
So in the mean time lots of fusing and cutting and printing tees and readying bits an bobs.

Ok so these are only iPhone pics, but I'm yet to get the good ones off the big puter.
This was our stall at Mathilda's in Adelaide over the weekend. Some gorgeous vintage suitcases and books to help merchandise our wares, and some last minute signage. Needless to say we now know what we're up against and have big plans for the Caulfield market day. And don't have to fit it all in our luggage!
We had some lovely feedback about our stall, so thanks again to everyone who came, we can't wait to do it again!

Whew! After a lot of work from mr. Furious yesterday and today, our web shop is finally open!
The 'shop' button now links straight there. ----------------------->
All the new summer stock is there, and I'll add all the new goodies over the next couple of weeks that will restock what sold at Mathilda's in Adelaide, and get us ready for Mathilda's in Melbourne. So if you wanted a size we didn't have, don't worry, it will soon be available again. Please keep checking in here at the blog for updates.
Our etsy shop will remain open and stock the off season items for our northern hemisphere customers. So if you need winter goodies, hit us up on etsy. I've added a separate button to link straight there. ------------------------------>
We've also had quite a few requests for larger sizes (and one for a size 0), so I'll definitely be adding a size 4 asap, with 5, 6 & 7 coming next year. I won't be adding a size 0 at this stage, but I'm more than happy to do a custom order if anyone needs it.
We'd also love to hear some feedback and and see pics of your gorgeous little boys wearing our gear, so please keep in touch! If you have any ideas for items you wish we had, let us know, we may just be working on them already!

Wow, such a great response to our first market! Lots of wonderful people taking home some goodies, and many more who stopped by to say hello and have a sticky beak. It was fantastic to meet you all.

Well, this is what the sweat shop looked liked 2 days ago.
And as of 20 minutes ago now, it's all done! Just have to heat set some tees tomorrow morning (they're drying overnight), and we're all set to go.
Well, after packing and breakfast and such.
I'll admit, a few things fell by the wayside such as the red check shorts, hoodies, dress up moustaches and treasure bags. *sniff*, but after restocking what we hopefully sell on Sunday, I'll definitely sew up the 'missing' goodies for online and for the Caulfield market.
I know the blog has been a misery of late, but I promise that after this weekend I'll be back to my crazy self and post fun stuff. Like musings for next season! Ooh. Yeah.

I know, I know, it's a rhetorical question. But still, jeebus.
At least they're going to look sweet as fricken frack when they're done.
Only the hems and waistbands left to sew on before labels and snaps.
Just the treasure bags after that.
And the moustaches.
Oh and finishing off the ties, adding buttons and holes and elastic to all the pants and waistcoats and shirts. sewing and printing the pj appliques, adding tiny velour moustaches to all the print tees, finalising the artwork for three more tees, making the screens and printing them up too. And back neck prints for all the tops.
Plus a look book, photographing everything, finalising bags and postcards, and the NEW website.

I think that's all the big stuff anyway.
Gah! No wonder I'm knackered.

He's just starting to understand pretend play, and was very into the tea sets at day care. So I went out an bought him this super cute little porcelain set which he loves so much. We made tea for the snakes and crocodiles and a shrek toy who burped and made king crack up into fits of giggles. Boys really do come out as boys don't they?

Snaps press hack

If you own a snap press for nappies, it only comes with the dies for plastic snaps. And if you want to buy the dies for metal snaps at a later date, well, it's pretty darn exxy.
I discovered a simple solution the other day when fuming over lack of funds to purchase said dies.

I give you the snaps press hack!
So simple I'm surprised I didn't think of it before. Just take out the top die and replace with the little tool that comes in the packet of snaps. Tighten. Put the base snap holder on the lower die. A bit of padded double sided sticky tape works well to hold it in place.

And that's it. So easy.
The result is much nicer than when I bang away with a hammer too.

I've had so much work to do to get ready for Mathilda's I've been putting off the little crappy jobs. But thankfully my super sister came to the rescue on the weekend and spent most of Sunday helping me out in the sweat shop. She cut out these insanely cute mini ties and bow ties (they'll have elastic and Velcro so they're toddler safe), and trimmed leather belts and sewed on buttons and steamed singlets and talked crap with me all day. Was great! She's even cutting some moustache logos out at work for me. Yay!

10m of denim and 3m of drill to be pre shrunk before cutting. Off to the laundromat with you. Too much for our little machine to wash without threatening to strike.
The shrinkage is 5%, so technically I could I just alter my pattern to include it, but safer to wash in fabric form I think.

Sewing tip: keep your needles handy

Next time you switch needles, keep the packet somewhere handy so you remember what kind you're using. Far easier than trying to read the tiny numbers on the needle, let alone remember if it's a ball point or sharp.
Oh and a piece of fabric wrapped around the machine with a little wadding underneath makes a great pin cushion in the handiest place. Not the prettiest, I know. And you'd get hate mail if you sent it out in a pin cushion swap, but it definitely keeps pins nearby when you need them.

Very happy with how the pork pie hat has turned out. Soooo fracking cute! I think I need to tweak the pattern a little more so the seam on the top shapes it better & so less blocking is required. But otherwise it's pretty sweet.

BUT
I think for the time involved and the price I need to charge to cover my costs it ends up much more expensive than similar hats being sold by larger retailers. So not viable at this stage. Ah well, maybe in the future.
